Sony sues Geohot and his team over PS3 3.55 jailbreak

Geohot or George Hotz as he is known in the real world, is no stranger to the hacking community as he is renowned for the work he did on jailbreaking the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and various PS3 hacks.

It’s the latter topic that has finally gotten him in trouble after he released his hack for PS3 firmware version 3.55. Despite claiming on his site that he condones piracy and the hack should not be used to disable key features, Sony has finally had enough and issued a lawsuit.

Currently the initial complaint and lawsuit papers can be viewed on his website in pdf format (though the site is currently down in an official capacity until the matter is dropped). however, the basic gist is that George Hotz (Geohot), “Bushing,” Hector Cantero, Sven Peter and “Segher” are being sued for bypassing the technology protection measures that Sony has installed on the console.

In some ways I’m not really surprised that they are being sued. Geohot has in the past come close to fanning Sony’s anger with previous exploits (yet in some ways the latter got more applause, as many people thought Sony were in the wrong on this occasion) and this latest jailbreak has finally broken them, especially now that pirate games have already started to surface thanks to the exploit.

On the other side of the coin it fans additional flames, mainly as to what jailbreaking actually means to the general public. To many it allows you to do what you want with the device that you have paid top dollar for.

Whatever the outcome this will no doubt spark several more arguments over the legitimacy of Geohot’s jailbreak and in the next few months we should have the court’s ruling.
