Basketball, Dunks, and Jumping Higher

A lot of basketball players hope to make jaw-dropping dunks once in their lifetime. But what does it really take to make the perfect dunk? Is it with the skills? Practice? Jump? in fact, being able to jump high and reach the basket takes more than just magic health supplements. it takes practice, fitness, and a lot of exercise. Not to mention that you also have to put in consistency and perseverance.

One of the key things that can help basketball players achieve their dream dunk is to jumping high. so how can one increase his vertical jump so as to make a jump? There are a lot of factors to consider. There is fitness that involves a lot of diet and exercise. There is also getting enough rest. You cannot expect that after limiting your food intake, you will eventually be able to jump high. Observing a proper diet and getting enough sleep and exercise help a lot in making one jump higher.

So what kind of exercises do you need to perform consistently and persistently so you can jump higher? You can do leg exercises. it is pretty basic for one to understand that you need to develop your leg muscles so you can jump higher. To do higher jumps and have better chances at dunking, you must be able to work out your leg muscles.

A good thing about leg exercises is that they can be done even when you are not in the gym. Leg exercises are also pretty simple and they can be performed practically anywhere. You can start by standing firmly on the ground then gradually standing on your toes. after which, try to lower your body to the ground with the use of your leg muscles and keep your back straight. Repeat this procedure as many times as you like.

You can also do jumps to exercise your legs. You do not need complex exercise machines for this. all you need to do is to jump up and down repeatedly with the force drawn from your legs. You can also use a jump rope during your jump exercises. Jumping rope provides a total body work out and can significantly help you increase the height of your jump.

There are a lot of other exercises that can help you jump higher. If you give the right amount of dedication to improving your vertical jump, you will see that you are able to make better dunks.

Weekly Fantasy Football – Week 2 Quarterback Picks

Sunday Night Football will be a track meet as Vick returns to Atlanta with the Eagles. Philadelphia is still trying to prove they are a Dream Team, and Vick will want to show off in his return to Atlanta. The Falcons on the other hand will be fighting to not go down 0-2, after being the number one seed last year. both teams will put up a lot points, which will be good for fantasy teams.

Rodgers was incredible in the Thursday night opener, and he should be able to put up similar numbers against a bad Carolina defense. also, while Ryan Grant is working his way back into the offense, the Packers will continue to pass much more than run.

Brady set all kinds of records putting up 511 yards against Miami on Monday night. He will come back to Earth against a solid San Diego defense, but he is still the best QB in the league. He will put up strong numbers, especially as the Patriots struggle to find a consistent running back.

Kerry Collins got a lot of the blame for the Texans drumming of the Colts, but Indianapolis was unable to stop the Texans in the first half. Schaub did not have a huge fantasy day, but his touchdowns should increase this week. The Dolphins pass defense was atrocious against the Patriots, and Schaub will exploit Miami’s defense for a big day in week 2.

Despite falling apart the final 3 possessions in New York, Romo had a really good fantasy week. The Jets have an elite defense, which Romo, Dez Bryant, and Jason Witten were able to move the ball against for three quarters. San Francisco struggled to stop one of the worst offenses in the league lead by Tarvaris Jackson. Romo will have a big day in a bounce back game for the Cowboys.

Sleeper: Matt Stafford

The Lions beat down Tampa Bay, which has a pretty good defense. Stafford to Calvin Johnson is a great matchup that will put up huge numbers if they can both stay healthy this year. this week the Lions return home against a Kansas City defense that gave up 41 points to the Bills last week. Stafford and Johnson are a greater scoring threat than anyone on the Bills, and although KC should play better, Detroit has the ability to hang 30 or 40 points on them.

HBU will play football, join Southland Conference

The holidays came early for Houston Baptist University and the Southland Conference as both crossed an item off their wish lists.

HBU joined a conference with nearby members and a home for all of its sports except men’s soccer, and the Southland added its first-ever Houston member and an institution that will soon bring another football team to its conference.

The Southland officially extended an invitation, effective July 1, 2013, to HBU on Monday, an invitation the Huskies accepted.

HBU will begin a football program that will play in the Southland in 2014 and may compete as soon as 2013.

HBU athletics director Steve Moniaci evoked the holiday spirit as he listed the things the university and athletics department had to give thanks for during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, among them the invitation from the Southland.

“We are very thankful that the Southland Conference recognized the positive contribution that HBU could make to their conference,” Moniaci said.

He then shifted to the next holiday on the calendar.

“We have been given a fantastic gift by the Southland Conference,” he said as he mentioned Christmas. “We have been given the gift of a permanent athletic home for almost all of our teams.”

The Huskies have also been given the gift of a clear path to NCAA tournaments because of the Southland’s status as an automatic qualifier, a gift Moniaci expects the Huskies to take advantage of soon.

“Now when, and I don’t say ‘if’ I say ‘when,’ we win conference championships in that league, we will immediately progress on as the automatic qualifier to the NCAA championships,” he said.

That automatic progression to NCAA tournaments and the closeness of the Southland’s members, all of which are in Texas, Louisiana or Arkansas, constituted two serious advantages over the Great West Conference, the conference the Huskies share with members from new Jersey, Illinois and North Dakota.

The Southland offers a proximity that has become rare in the era of Division I realignment, Southland commissioner Tom Burnett said.

It also boasts a long history of football, which was a large part of the Southland’s discussion with HBU during a process that took more than a year, Burnett said.

HBU officials admit that there remains a great deal of work to launch the program, but a team could take the field as soon as 2013 if the Huskies land a recruiting class before the fall of 2012.

“If we get it going by then, great,” Moniaci said. “But if we don’t, it’s only because we’re taking our time and trying to get it right.”

HBU plans for more fundraising before the process of finding a head coach for the football team.

Then comes the step of finding a venue for home games. HBU intends to build a practice field on campus, but an on-campus football stadium would be years away.

Moniaci mentioned the possibility of playing in the Dynamo’s new football-friendly stadium, a local university’s stadium, or, as one of HBU’s board members jokingly suggested, Reliant Stadium.

A football stadium will have to wait for the construction of a special events center that will host the Huskies’ men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams, a facility mentioned during the Southland’s site visit to HBU on Nov. 9 and described by President Robert B. Sloan Jr. as a venue that will host sporting events as well as concerts and conventions.

The multi-purpose center, Burnett said, will be a “showcase facility for HBU, our conference and the city.”

That conference may be a growing conference.

“The way we refer to it is we’re still open for business on the membership side of things,” Burnett said after making HBU the Southland’s 11th member. “This is a league that for the last six years has been a 12-member league. There’s some interest in our league in returning to a 12-member league and perhaps look at other football-playing institutions.”

The 12th member may come from a football-playing Division II school in need of a conference invitation in order to move into Division I.

“Right now, I think that we’re gonna start to look at this conference, at least initially, as an 11-member configuration in the 2013-14 year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we move in a direction to pick up a 12th member,” Burnett said.

While Southland officials realize they might have more work to do, HBU officials know they do.

“We’re not where we need to be yet,” Moniaci said. “We have teams that we have to start. we have sports that we have to start. we have facilities that we need to get built. we have money that we’ve got to raise. but I’ll tell you this much, we’re a lot further along than we were when we started this venture (from NAIA to NCAA) five years ago.”

NFC North Prediction – Green Bay Won’t Make the Playoffs

1. Detroit looks good. Mathew Stafford, Ndamukong Suh, and Calvin Johnson lead an up-and-coming team. They are no longer a doormat, and we predict here that not only will they make the playoffs, they will win the NFC North Division outright.

We expect the Lions will split with Green Bay and Minnesota, and will lose to the Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, and San Diego Chargers. we expect they will have enough momentum to win all the other games on their schedule, which are in fact winnable. so the happy Detroit Lions fans will see an 11-5 record.

2. Yeah. The Packers won the Super Bowl. we predicted they would. Aaron Rodgers, Clay Mathews, Donald Driver, et.al. will naturally be expected to repeat.

But, the Super Bowl Winner almost never repeats, so we can assume something will go wrong. And if things go wrong, don’t be surprised if the Green Bay Packers go 9-7 and miss the playoffs.

How can this happen? all that needs to happen is they lose to the Saints and the Falcons, split with the Lions and Vikings, and lose to the San Diego Chargers, all of which is in the realm of reasonable possibility. Then, they just need to lose two more games to highly motivated teams like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants, and the Packers will be 9-7.

Sorry, Green Bay. Life at the top is tough, and glory is short-lived.

3. The Minnesota Vikings are looking at matching the Packers at 9-7 and also missing the playoffs. Donavan McNabb and Adrian Peterson notwithstanding, the team just doesn’t look like a winner. in September alone, look for them to go 0-3 against the Chargers, Bucs and Lions. And it will go downhill from there. They won’t be able to beat the Falcons or Saints, and will split with the Lions and Packers, and just need to lose one more game to end at 9-7.

Of course they will be able to gloat over the misery of arch rival Green Bay.

4. We’re going against conventional wisdom on the Bears. we think they are awful. we think they are so bad that they will be 1-15 and will win the Andrew Luck derby. They can beat the Denver Broncos in December, but they will lose to everyone else. Jay Cutler will be booed out of town. Lonnie Smith, who is a really nice guy, will be gone.

Fantasy Football Week 11: Cam Newton and 4 Other Starters to Bench

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice found himself in this spot last week. I donned the “Bench” mark on him when he squared up against Seattle Seahawk’s tough run defense and received tremendous flack over the call.

In fact, staunch Bleacher Report commentator Durrell Cotton equated me with a Sith Lord, attempting to poison young minds of inexperienced fantasy football managers everywhere. after the dust settled in Seattle, I went from being “insane” to receiving reluctant props on the call.

This week, surely I’ll be held by the thinnest of threads over the fantasy cliff for urging you to bench Rice. but folks, listen to reason.

If you didn’t like what you saw out of Rice in Seattle, you’re going to hate what you see this week when he runs into the brick wall called the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals defense is giving up a mere 86.8 yards per game to running backs. Only the San Francisco 49ers give up fewer yards.

The Bengals held the new and improved Fred Jackson to 66 yards on 17 carries. and Frank Gore got the same amount of carries (17) against Cincinnati and dashed for a whopping 42 yards. All things called Maurice Jones-Drew was held to 85 yards, as well.

In the majority of Rice’s games this season (five out of nine), he’s averaged 3.5 yards per carry or less. That’s mediocre. Expect a same mediocre stat line from him on Sunday, unless, of course, you expect Rice to throw another touchdown to tight end Ed Dickson again.

Guys to start over Rice: Kendall Hunter (SF), James Starks (GB), Reggie Bush (Mia)

NFL Week 11 preview

WARNING: Kicking the ball to Chicago Bears’ return man DevinHester can be hazardous to the health of your team’s won-lossrecord. Given that he’s the NFL’s all-time leader in combinedkick-return touchdowns, including a league-record 12 on puntreturns, one would think opponents already had been served notice.Apparently not. This season, he is averaging 20.1 yards on puntreturns and has two touchdowns. on kickoff returns, Hester’saveraging 24 yards and had a 98-yard touchdown against Minnesota. •Yet teams continue to kick to him, as Detroit did last week. Andthe Lions paid for it. Hester ran back three punts for 122 yards injust one half, including an 82-yard dash for a TD, before leavingthe game due to illness and a sprained ankle as the Bears rolled toa 37-13 win. • so why do teams continue to kick to Hester?According to Hester, changing a game plan for one player is “toomuch” for any special-teams unit, and he points out the odds stilldon’t favor him. but don’t bother telling that to San Diego coachNorv Turner, who said his Chargers will be on alert for Hester thisweekend when they travel to Chicago. • “It’s not a deal where youwant to put our guys out there and say, ‘Go cover him,’” Turnertold reporters this week. “We have to have a plan and we do have aplan.” unfortunately for the Chargers, whether that plan will workmight depend more on Hester than it does on San Diego’s coverageteams. Assuming, of course, the Chargers decide to ignore allwarnings and go ahead and kick the ball to Hester.

A TITAN IN THE AFC SOUTH

Most folks think of Matt Hasselbeck as the quarterback who ledthe Seattle Seahawks to multiple division crowns in the NFC West.would you believe the new Tennessee signal-caller might be the bestQB in the AFC South? With Indianapolis’ Peyton Manning out allseason, Houston’s Matt Schaub injured and possibly done for theseason and Jacksonville leaning on rookie QB Blaine Gabbert,Hasselbeck’s veteran presence stands out. And with a victory overAtlanta this week, Hasselbeck can put the Titans one game behindthe Texans atop the division. Hasselbeck has passed for 2,233 yardswith 14 touchdowns and only seven interceptions since signing withTennessee this offseason, and with Schaub going down, he has achance to deliver a mighty blow in the division. welcome back torelevance, mr. Hasselbeck.

After opening the season 0-3, the Kansas City Chiefs reeled offfour consecutive wins before dropping the next two. now 4-5, theChiefs are only one game out of first place in the AFC West. Whilethat offers hope, the team has significant weaknesses. The runninggame has been decimated since Jamaal Charles tore knee ligaments inthe season’s second game. now the team is without QB Matt Cassel, who injured his throwing hand last week. Insert backup QB TylerPalko, who will start his first NFL game this week against thePatriots. It’s a tough task for a team still seeking to find itsidentity. “Right now, it’s hard to say what our strengths are,”linebacker Derrick Johnson said. “Sometimes, it takes you the wholeyear to figure that out.” With seven games to go, Chiefs fans canonly hope Johnson wasn’t talking about a full calendar year.

Oakland’s ‘other’ back

Oakland running back Darren McFadden always has had success onthe field. His problem has been staying on the field — he’s neverappeared in more than 13 games. After jumping out this season with610 yards rushing in the first six games, McFadden suffered asprained foot after two carries in Game 7. He hasn’t played rushingfor 352 yards in three games. “Michael Bush is one really finefootball player,” Raiders coach Hue Jackson said. “There’s a lot ofteams that would love to have him, but he’s ours. He plays for theRaiders and he’s done a fantastic job.” The question is, has Bushdone such a fantastic job that there will be no job for McFaddenwhen he returns? Leading the AFC West, the Raiders might decide tocontinue to ride the hot hand.

big week for reeling lions

The Detroit Lions burst onto the scene while going 5-0 to startthe season. Since then, the team has lost three of four games andis tied with the Bears for second place in the NFC North behindGreen Bay. “We’ve had highs and lows just past halfway through theseason and we haven’t batted an eye either way,” Detroit receiverNate Burleson said. “We’ve had big-time wins, exorcised some demonsand got smacked in the mouth in Chicago.” Lions QB MatthewStafford, who has a fractured right index finger, threw aseason-high four interceptions last week against the Bears afterthrowing just four through eight games. Once considered a playofflock, the Lions desperately need a win over the underdog Panthers(2-7) to restore their chances of making this year’spostseason.

Islanders baseball team announces 13 signees, including return of Meza

CORPUS CHRISTI —The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi baseball team announced 13 signings, including former moody standout Justin Meza, who left the Islanders to enroll at Alvin Community College after an academic suspension.

The right-handed pitcher can play one season at Alvin and transfer back to the Islanders if he remains in good academic standing. Meza, who was a weekend starter for the Islanders, was 4-3 with a 4.96 earned-run average as a freshman last season.

“Justin has already shown he is a major impact player in the Southland Conference, posting the second-most strikeouts in the league as a freshman last season,” Islanders coach Scott Malone said. “We look forward to welcoming him back into our program.”

The recruiting class includes four other players from the Coastal Bend, including: Carroll’s Chris Cano and O’Shea Dumes and John Paul’s Dominic Lopez and Jakob Silva.

The class also includes: the Woodlands’ High School outfielder Clayton Davis, Clear Creek High School pitcher Tanner Griggs, Frisco Heritage High School second baseman Brandon Guilford, Keller High School outfielder Zacarias Hardy, Klein Oak High School pitcher Nolan Holland, Des Moines Area Community College catcher Brad Lamberti, Yavapai College catcher Josh Tate and Angelina College infielder Zach Taylor.

Malone is excited about the players coming in and the quality of class that his coaching staff, led by top assistant and recruiting coordinator Chris Ramirez, picked up in the fall signing period.

“Coach Ramirez has put together another talented group of future Islanders,” Malone said. “I know how hard my staff works; my coaches do an outstanding job of getting to know the kids and their families. I can tell you these kids will not only be talented baseball players but most importantly, great representatives of our program in the classroom and in the community.”

My life as an Estonian football coach – the fan who bluffed for Ireland

17 November 2011 last updated at 08:55 ET Share this page Conor Cunningham bluffed for Ireland

An Irish football fan scored a goal of his own and set off on a fantasy football adventure when he bluffed his way into the Ireland v Estonia match last Friday without a ticket.

Conor Cunningham, 27, got into the game on Friday night and managed to bag himself a seat next to Estonian manager Tarmo Ruutli.

He then stood up close to Robbie Keane and Keith Andrews as they did TV interviews in the tunnel.

And it was all down to a "borrowed" Estonian tracksuit.

"I was just determined to see the match – 11 of us arrived in Tallinn for the game and we were being quoted 600 euros for tickets," he said.

"In the end, 10 of us got into the stadium – but I definitely got the best story and photos."

The part-time fitness instructor from Cork tried to pretend he was a security guard to gain admission. when that did not work, he spotted an open doorway and thought it might lead into the ground.

"it was a corridor and a dead end. but I did see a bag of footballs and, when I picked them up, spotted an Estonian tracksuit underneath them. he pulled it on and walked into the stadium.

He went to the Estonian dug-out and realised he was sitting next to the manager. After a while, he was spotted and told to move.

"when the match was over and Ireland had qualified, I said I'd chance my arm and I walked out on to the pitch. I celebrated with the players, shook hands with them all and even asked a few could I have their jerseys.

Suspicious

"they were all really nice — they apologised and said they'd already promised the jerseys to friends and family. but Keith Andrews said I could have his – though I didn't get to see him again after they went into the dressing room," he said.

Eventually an Estonian team official got suspicious about how a man in an Estonian tracksuit was celebrating with the Irish so much.

"she came over to me and started talking to me and I just said I had to bring the bag of footballs back," he said.

Outside the stadium, he told his friends about his adventure, then posted a video to the Irish Independent.

DIY Sports Betting – NFL Betting System Review

DIY Sports Betting has now made available a specialty betting system for the National Football League. the system comes as a PDF file that is readable on any computer.

It is based on situational point spreads, which are presented in the form of easy to read charts that show the percentage of wins you can expect by betting the chosen spread. There is no progressive betting scheme or other trickery recommended. just find the number on a chart and bet it. every number provides an edge of 53 percent or greater so you always have an edge.

Also included is the Motivation Factor Chart. It is unique and very effective at its purpose. It stops you from placing bets on teams that are not highly motivated by the circumstances of the game. that will compliment the point spread charts and further increase your winning percentage. It can also be used by itself as a handicapping tool for games that are not already on the charts by the spread. any winning bettor will tell you the key is in finding motivated teams and this is the first and only tool I have ever seen dedicated to that purpose.

The NFL point spread charts and the Motivation Factor Chart are included in separate PDF files so they can be printed. that makes them much easier to work with and gives you simple one click printing.

If you are looking for a simple but effective NFL Betting system, DIY Sports Betting has put together a good package at a very reasonable price the average bettor should be able to afford.

Football Rookie Cards

Football rookie cards are the first appearance of a football player in a particular trading card. These are highly valued and sought after by football card collectors. Every year major companies bring out special editions on the best players of the season.

For an ardent follower of football who is into sports card collection, football rookie cards are perhaps the most prized possessions. Sports card collection itself is a very rewarding hobby. and if this is a rookie card, then it becomes that much more special. A football card is the first appearance of a football player in a particular trading card.

Among all other types of sports cards, rookie cards are the most valued and are most sought after. Some regard it as the first ever appearance of a player, while others regard it as the first official card of a player from a major manufacturer. Collecting these is a separate hobby altogether. People are crazy about these. Some people spend fortunes on building a sports card collection. Although quite a time consuming and expensive hobby, some people keep hunting for these, looking to add every one of them to their collection, and football being one of the most popular games, football cards are prized even more.

Some people collect these only because of their novelty, others for the information, while the rest for simply nostalgic reasons. for American football fans, collecting football rookie cards of NFL players is a very popular hobby. all leading manufacturers bring out special editions on the best NFL players of the season every year. These cards are highly valued and, considering their demand, are often highly priced. however, that definitely doesn’t serve as a deterrent for crazy football fans. they are just too happy to add their favorite players’ rookie card to their ever-increasing collection. after the 2010 pro-bowl, a Vincent Jackson card is what every collector would be looking for.

Football cards are also excellent for investments. their value never diminishes. On the contrary, they become more valued over the years, growing in demand. Apart from the ones for current players, collectors keep hunting for those special editions from the yesteryears to add to their collection. Apart from local shops, these are also available online. Some collectors also form groups where they exchange cards. If you are on the lookout for some rare rookie card, being a part of such a group can be a good idea.

LONDON, England, November 16- is there racism in football? my first instinct is to say yes, because football is a reflection of society and, unfortunately, racism is present in many societies around the world.Furthermore, taking into account the various cases where fans have abused players during matches, this is obviously still a serious issue in some parts of the globe.

What really concerns me now, however, is investigating whether there is racism on the field of play.

In light of what has happened in England recently and in other nations such as Spain and Portugal, where players have allegedly abused each other, football authorities must step up and take action.

The first thing that needs to be done is to define what constitutes racist behaviour on the pitch. If one player calls another player a “black c***,” like England and Chelsea captain John Terry allegedly did to Anton Ferdinand during a Premier League match last month, is that racist?

Is he insulting Ferdinand for the colour of his skin, or is he simply insulting him and adding skin colour as an adjective?

Equally, is it racist if a black player calls a white opponent a “white c***?”

You may think I am being silly, but it is an important distinction to make. it is not the same as if a player calls another a “n*****,” which is clearly a racist insult.

Therefore, in my eyes, the priority is to decide whether calling someone black is racist. For example, Portuguese legend Eusebio was quoted this week saying that he was called black thousands of times in his football career and he never saw it as an insult.

He added: “Black is the colour of my skin and I am proud to be black. I may have been upset if they called me white!”

Another example of why it is important to make this distinction concerns an incident of alleged racist abuse in October’s Premier League match between Manchester United and Liverpool.

Senegal-born France international Patrice Evra accused Uruguay forward Luis Suarez of such abuse when he was called “black” various times during the contest at Anfield.

Once the definition of racism is attained, football authorities then need to decide on a penalty.

And in this case, if you ask me, it needs to be a heavy one. Would a 10-match ban along with a fine of two months’ salary be excessive? not in my eyes, but that is for the pertinent people to decide.

I would like to add that the Terry case is being investigated by the London Metropolitan Police.

It is not up to me to comment on whether this should be a matter for the police to deal with, but shouldn’t football organizations be the ones to set the example and deal with cases of this nature?

So I would like to call upon football’s governing bodies to take a stand and to take the lead on this matter. With a multitude of cameras present at most top-flight games around the world, it is only a matter of time before another case arises.

When it does, FIFA or UEFA or whatever body has jurisdiction on the matter, should be ready to address the situation.Pedro Pinto is a sports anchor for CNN World sports.

From the UCA Archives: A brief history of women’s basketball

Women’s basketball began the same year Arkansas State Normal School (now the University of Central Arkansas) began operations — 1908. During that first year, the women’s team played six games against three opponents: Central College, Little Rock St. Mary’s High School and Little Rock High School. In those days, it was not unusual for the schedule to be made up primarily of high school opponents.

The women’s games during the first year were very low-scoring affairs. their first year record was (1-5), and three of their games were against Central College.

In their first game with Central College, UCA lost 14-4. In their second game, they scored half as many points and lost 12-2. In the third game with Central College, UCA scored twice as many points as it did in the second game but still lost 7-4.

During the 1910-1911 basketball season, the women’s team played 11 games, with nine of those games played against high school teams.

It wasn’t until the 1930-1931 season that all opponents of the UCA women’s basketball team were colleges. The high schools that provided contests for UCA during the early years were Little Rock Mount St. Mary’s, Little Rock High School, Morrilton, Dardanelle, Conway, Plumerville, Jacksonville, Russellville, Searcy, Lake Village, North Little Rock, England, Pottsville and Sparkman. In addition to the high school opponents, the women’s team also played the YWCA teams from Little Rock and Memphis. UCA’s college opponents for women’s basketball from 1908 to 1932 included Central College of Conway, University of the Cumberlands, Hendrix College, Arkansas Tech University, University of Memphis, Arkansas State University, Southern Arkansas University, Henderson State University, Crescent College, University of Arkansas at Monticello, Southeastern Oklahoma State University and College of the Ozarks.

During this period, the women’s basketball schedule was somewhat erratic in terms of opponents and number of games played. They might play only three games one year, but the next year play seven games or more.

Until 1920, the women’s team, like the men’s, had no mascot. Sports writers usually referred to the women’s team as the Normal Sextet. During the early years, the women played three on three halfcourt basketball, therefore, the term “sextet.”

When the men became known as the “Bears” in 1920, the women’s team was then called the “Bearettes.”  as a rule, from 1908 to 1932, the “Bearettes” played anywhere from four to seven games a season. Two exceptions to this rule were the 1910-1911 season when 11 games were played, and the 1915-1916 season when they engaged in 10 basketball contests.

Following the 1931-1932 season, UCA abruptly ended women’s basketball and did not resume the sport again until 1976. The reason(s) for this cessation of play has been somewhat of a mystery.

According to Mary Ferguson, who attended UCA in the late 1930s, “It was believed at the time that basketball was a rough sport and was not good for the health of the young women who played the game.”

Ferguson’s comments were supported by a national movement in the late 1920s that sought to ban women’s basketball. Others who were interviewed by this author and are somewhat contemporary with Ferguson echoed her comments.

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, it was widely believed that basketball was too rigorous a sport for women to engage in and could be injurious to their health. that belief was supported by the fact that the Women’s Division of the National Amateur Athletic Federation (WDNAAF) pronounced that basketball was unhealthy and inappropriate for women, and in 1925, the WDNAAF passed a resolution outlawing extramural competition. The WDNAAF was very influential and in 1927 was successful in its efforts to cancel the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) National Women’s Basketball Tournament.

According to womensbasketballonline.com/history/timeline1900_29.html, which is a timeline of women’s basketball, “The WDNAAF holds its first conference (1923). It attacks competitive athletics, especially basketball as being unhealthy and inappropriate. Concern that women’s scholastic athletics will begin to resemble men’s (quasi-professional, corrupt, promoting betting) they promote a ‘Sports for Sports sake’ philosophy.”

In 1925, the WDNAAF begins to receive widespread support and according to WomensBasketballOnline.com, “WDNAAF passes a resolution outlawing extramural competition, opposing gate receipts at women’s games, all travel for women’s games, and all publicity of women’s sports. The National Association of Secondary School Principals supports the resolution. They pressure high school sports associations to disband tournaments and are most successful in Eastern states and large city schools, less so in rural states.”

In 1929, the State of Colorado banned all female athletics. according to WomensBasketballOnline.com, “Girls’ athletics came to an abrupt halt in 1928-1929, when Arvada High School’s Superintendent Clifton B. Raybourn determined that ‘it was hazardous to their health” and stopped girls’ athletics. The Colorado Medical Association agreed with the health concern and the State of Colorado lost girls’ competitive athletics.’”

UCA women were allowed to participate in other sports (all intramural), including volleyball, ping-pong, shuffleboard, archery, tennis, darts and softball. of these sports, volleyball was by far the most popular. In 1936, five teams were created and they competed with each other on an intramural basis.

When women’s basketball did return to UCA, the women did not play in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference (AIC) as the men’s team did, but played in the Arkansas Women’s Intercollegiate Sports Association (AWISA). UCA women’s teams competed in AWISA until they entered the AIC during the 1983-1984 season.

There were many differences between the team of 1931-1932 and the team of 1976-1977. They were no longer called the “Bearettes” but were known as the “Sugar Bears.”  They also played many more games than the early teams. The 1976-1977 team played 23 games, earned a 15-8 record their first year back on the court, and scored many more points than the early teams. The 1976-1977 team played 14 games in which they scored 70 points or more .

The Sugar Bears won the AIC Championship in 1984 and 1985. They also won three NAIA District 17 Tournaments in 1984, 1985 and 1991, and a Gulf South Conference title in 2005. From 1995 to 2005, the Sugar Bears played in five NCAA Tournaments in Division II and made the Elite eight in 2003 and 2005.

In 2006, UCA moved to NCAA Division I and into the Southland Conference, becoming eligible for conference titles or post season play with the 2010-2011 season.

Looking for some great football action right on your desktop? Wanting to watch NFL games online? Look no further than two different options. Game Pass is perhaps not the best alternative if you live outside North America, but, this website allows you, for the first time in NFL history of broadcasting on the web, a full season of games. If you have high speed internet connectivity, you may or may not have luck to watch NFL games online as there have been reports of bandwidth problems, especially if you own a MAC computer. I have found the best solution for this.

Any fan of NFL can watch over 180 games in High Definition over the entire season and watch up to 8 games at a time on your computer screen. This NFL action can also be accessed no matter where you are and it’s all LIVE You can get live streams of every Sunday ticket game which allows you to get all your favorite team stats and scores.

As this is new for 2007, it has gained a lot of followers yet, but, I think this is the best internet TV station to watch NFL games online, as there’s not much choice. There’s plenty of other football action on other Internet TV stations, like on ESPN360, who may have regular football to offer, but, for true NFL game day experience, you can only tune into one station that currently lets you watch NFL games online.

As an avid football fan of my favorite team, Dallas Cowboys, I found that when I was away on a trip overseas, I could watch NFL games online which I thought I was going to miss; all with a click of a mouse button that allows you to watch games from anywhere in the world and was not limited to certain areas of the world. This is extremely important for us die-hard fans who do not want to miss any action no matter what. You will never miss another NFL game due to other commitments.

Oregon Basketball: Ducks Kick Off 2011-12 Season Against Vanderbilt

It's a tough opener, for sure, not unlike that of the UO football team, which started off the season ranked third in the nation but fell 40-27 to current no. 1 LSU in Arlington, Texas, on September 3.

The Oregon basketball team has its work cut out if the Ducks are to find more success in their own season opener.

The Commodores have all of their starters back from last year's team, which went 23-11 and 9-7 in the SEC before falling 69-66 to Richmond in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Ducks are coming off a 21-18 campaign, having won the College Basketball Invitational tournament by beating Creighton in the best-of-three CBI championship series. among Oregon's key returners are starters Garrett Sim and E.J. Singler. Guard Johnathan Loyd and forwards Tyrone Nared and Jeremy Jacob also having starting experience, but the Ducks' chances for success this season could hinge mostly on how quickly their newcomers adapt.

True freshman Jabari Brown looks like a future Pac-12 Conference basketball star, and the Ducks will have a great chance to make some noise this season if he blossoms quickly. Will he be effective right off the bat to help Oregon compete against Vanderbilt?

Maybe. Brown made huge strides from the Ducks' first exhibition game to their second, just a few days later, when he turned in 16 points, 11 rebounds and five assists in a 100-58 victory over Lewis and Clark College.

The competition will be significantly more difficult on Friday, however, so it'll be interesting to see what Brown can do for the Ducks against a tough opponent.

Center Tony Woods and forward Olu Ashaolu could also be big contributors for Oregon this season, but again, the question now is whether they'll contribute enough to help the Ducks compete with the Commodores.

The Ducks have a lot of new faces that have a lot of potential. We'll see on Friday how quickly this group can mesh its returning players with its newcomers.

Football: Oregon Ducks Strength and Conditioning Program

When teams struggle in college football, the head coach receives all the blame. But that is always not fair. Chip Kelly has proven to be a good coach this season and has consistently praised his strength and conditioning staff at Oregon for the team’s success this season. The Oregon Ducks have demonstrated this season that the fastest way for a program to improve is by having an excellent strength and conditioning program. The Ducks run a high tempo offense in an effort to tire out the defense. Lamichael James, the recent recipient of the Doak Walker Award for being the nation’s top running back has mentioned throughout the season how defenses wear out trying to keep with the Ducks’ offense. The Ducks rotate a lot of players on defense to create turnovers. Jim Radcliffe is the unknown hero and leader of the strength and conditioning program. Radcliffe’s program has worked well for the Oregon Ducks.

Florida Gators won two national championships in the last six seasons. Urban Meyer has credited Mick Marotti several times for helping him build two national championship teams. Marotti is the unknown hero and leader of the strength and conditioning program for the Florida Gators. Marotti’s program has worked well for the Gators.

Strength and Conditioning Team

The team has to create basic conditioning level programs for the athletes by position, while maximizing the use of the facilities for athletes. Proper nutrition and rest help create dynamic athletes. When programs emerge in college football the team deserves more credit.

Universities must start making an even larger investment into staff members of strength and conditioning teams. Radcliffe and Marotti both deserve a raise. Radcliffe and Marotti have demonstrated teams can help programs get better in a relatively short amount of time.

In college football the coach should not always be fired if a team struggles. Maybe the college football program needs a new strength and conditioning staff. The success of the Oregon Ducks this season is shifting even more focus on the importance of these programs. The Ducks’ philosophy is to simply wear out opponents. it will be interesting to see how other programs respond around the country to the Ducks’ approach and philosophy. Fans of college football should become more familiar with the leader and the staff members of the strength and conditioning team. often these team have the biggest impact on whether a football program is losing or winning. These teams have become even more important and instrumental in college football.
