Tighter restrictions proposed on in-car gadgets

Carmakers should disable built-in electronic devices while the vehicle’s in motion, under new proposals from transportation secretary Ray LaHood.

The move could see restrictions on all communication, entertainment and navigation devices, from texting to entering addresses into GPS systems. Electronic warning systems such as forward-collision or lane departure alerts would be exempt.

"Distracted driving is a dangerous and deadly habit on America’s roadways – that’s why I’ve made it a priority to encourage people to stay focused behind the wheel," says LaHood.

"These guidelines are a major step forward in identifying real solutions to tackle the issue of distracted driving for drivers of all ages."

LaHood wants manufacturers to make devices less complex, and limit device operation to one hand. Users shouldn’t need to look away from the road for more than two seconds, and there should be limits on the amount of visual information presented to the driver, as well as onthe number of manual inputs required.

Many actions should only be available to passengers, say the guidelines, and shouldn’t even be visible to the driver. These include text messaging, internet and social media browsing, entering addresses into navigation systems and 10-digit phone dialing.

And the department’s also considering introducing restrictions on devices that aren’t built in, such as navigation systems, smartphones, tablets and pads and other mobile communications devices.

"We recognize that vehicle manufacturers want to build vehicles that include the tools and conveniences expected by today’s American drivers," says National Highway Traffic Safety Administration administrator David Strickland.

"the guidelines we’re proposing would offer real-world guidance to automakers to help them develop electronic devices that provide features consumers want—without disrupting a driver’s attention or sacrificing safety."

The guidelines have received a cautious welcome from car manufacturers.

"Digital technology has created a connected culture in America that has forever changed our society. Consumers expect to have access to new technology, so integrating and adapting this technology to enable safe driving is the solution," says the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers.

"Drivers are going to have conversations, listen to music and read maps while driving, and automakers are helping them do this more safely with integrated hands-free systems that help drivers focus on the road."

USB Toys

USB Toys are toys or fun cool gadgets that use the electrical power from the USB ports of computers. there are many forms of USB Toys. For example, a USB Toy can be an Office Toy and be used in the office since that is where many USB ports can be found. another example would be the USB Panic Button Toy which can be used by office workers to create a temporary screen-saver when the boss is nearby, so that the office worker would not be caught playing games on the computer instead of working on his project. Other types of USB Toys can be just for fun. For example there are many USB Missle Launcher Toys out there, one of which is the Spiderman Dream Cheeky USB Missile Launcher Toy. these USB missile launchers can really pack a punch and serves to pass some time

So what does USB stand for?

I have talked so much about the USB as well as introduced you to some cool USB Toys but I have yet to tell you exactly what USB actually is. USB stands for ‘Universal Serial Bus’ and has been touted as the solution for a computer interface that can work universally. The USB Port boasts cross-platform compatibility for Macintosh, Linux and UNIX, and all versions of Windows since Windows 98SE. The USB connector ports are available on every computing device built in the past few years. The USB specification provides a 5V (volts) supply on a single wire to allow connected USB devices and USB Toys to draw power. The specification provides for no more than 5.25V and no less than 4.35V between the positive and negative bus power lines. (If you do not understand this it is perfectly alright because I do not understand this either).

Why use the USB port for Toys?

The USB connector was originally designed to replace the serial and parallel ports on computers. if you can remember, the parallel ports were very commonly used to connect printers in the past, while the serial ports were used to connect the computer mice. With the invention of the USB Port, it was hoped that eventually a number of devices would be able to connect using just one type of port on the computer, that is the USB port. soon, devices such as printers and mice and even the keyboard, could be connected via USB. The use of USB ports to power toys was never intended to be so. I must thank the smart computer technician who came up with this idea, without him there would be no USB Port Toys.

Furthermore, USB Toys are usually very cheap because of their small size and also because they can be easily powered by the USB Port instead of requiring batteries or other forms of power sources. USB Toys are thus a very good form of cheap toys and can serve as very good and fun gifts.

Mattel Back To The Future hover board announced

Posted on 19 Feb 2012 at 03:29

Toy maker Mattel has made the announcement for which almost every child of the eighties has been waiting: it’s finally making the hover board from back To the Future a reality.

The use of the Mattel logo to lend a bit of realism to the hover board used by Marty McFly in the second and third back To the Future films caused quite a stir at their release. even now, rumours persist that Mattel has perfected the technology required to create a hovering skateboard but that it can’t legally sell the devices due to consumer safety laws.

While the company’s latest announcement, made this weekend at the new York Toy fair, doesn’t admit to having anti-gravity technology it does offer film fans a chance to own an official replica of the famous board.

The Mattel back To the Future Hover Board, to give the gadget its full name, is a 1:1 replica of the film’s board designed to be as screen-accurate as possible – to the point where it even features a hole where McFly ripped the hand pole to transform the board from a scooter into a hovering skateboard.

Although the board doesn’t actually hover, Mattel promises that it will glide over most surfaces – with water being a prominent exception for anyone who fancies recreating the hover board’s introductory scene – and includes sound effects recreated from the films.

Mattel has warned, however, that the replica is likely to be a “high-cost item,” and while it’s not announcing the price just yet it is warning that the construction may not go ahead. “There will be a minimum number of orders required to go into production”, the company announced. “If we don’t receive the minimum orders, [it] won’t go into production and customers will not be charged.”

The hover board is expected to open for pre-order in March, with the final product delivered some time in November or December – assuming enough orders can be taken in that time.

AP Interview: JC Penney CEO talks about the chain

NEW YORK — everyone in the retail world wants to see if Ron Johnson can work his magic a third time.

For 15 years, he helped shape Target’s cheap chic image. then, he spent about a decade changing the way Americans shop for electronic gadgets at Apple.

Now, Johnson faces perhaps his biggest challenge yet as CEO of J.C. Penney: Dust off one of the dowdiest brands in retailing to make it cool again. To do that, he’s borrowing from Apple’s uber-successful playbook.

During an hour-long interview in which he talked about how he planned to transform Penney, the 52-year-old mentioned Apple 19 times. Like he did at Apple, the 30-year retail industry veteran says he plans to change the shopping experience, shun heavy discounting and sell services along with products.

25 EU nations to sign treaty to stop overspending

BRUSSELS — all countries in the European Union, except Britain and the Czech Republic, agreed Monday to sign a new treaty designed to stop overspending in the eurozone and put an end to the bloc’s crippling debt crisis, while also pledging to stimulate growth across the region.

The new treaty, known as the fiscal compact, was agreed to at a summit of European leaders in Brussels. it includes strict debt brakes and makes it more difficult for deficit sinners to escape sanctions. The 17-country eurozone hopes that the tighter rules will convince investors that all countries will get their debts under control and restore confidence in their joint currency.

Although the new rules only apply to the 17 euro states, the currency union was hoping to get broad support from the other EU states.

The summit also promised Monday to stimulate growth and create jobs across the region, in a tacit acknowledgment that their exclusive focus on austerity has had painful side effects.

Incomes up strong 0.5 pct., consumer spending flat

WASHINGTON — Americans’ income rose in December by 0.5 percent, the most in nine months, a hopeful sign for the economy after a year of weak wage gains. But consumers didn’t spend any more last month than they had in November.

Americans ended up saving their additional income.

Economists noted that income rose last month largely because of strong hiring. The economy added 200,000 jobs in December. More jobs mean more income available to spend.

The best hope for the economy is further job gains. On Friday, the government is expected to report another solid month of hiring for January.

For all of 2011, income barely rose.

WTO: China unfairly limits export of raw materials

The World Trade Organization ruled Monday that China unfairly limited exports of nine raw materials to protect domestic manufacturers.

A WTO appeals body rejected China’s appeal of an earlier ruling in July that concluded the Asian economic powerhouse had violated international trade rules. The appeals body largely sided with the U.S., European Union and Mexico, which had taken issue with Chinese restrictions on its exports of nine materials used widely in the steel, aluminum and chemical industries.

The ruling affects China’s exports of certain forms of bauxite, coke, fluorspar, magnesium, manganese, silicon carbide, silicon metal, yellow phosphorous and zinc. The WTO appeals body says China must now “bring its export duty and export quota measures into conformity with its WTO obligations.”

Tech companies team up to combat email scams

NEW YORK — Google, Facebook and other big tech companies are jointly designing a system for combating email scams known as phishing.

Such scams try to trick people into giving away passwords and other personal information by sending emails that look as if they come from a legitimate bank, retailer or other business. When Bank of America customers see emails that appear to come from the bank, they might click on a link that takes them to a fake site mimicking the real Bank of America’s. there, they might enter personal details, which scam artists can capture and use for fraud.

To combat that, 15 major technology and financial companies have formed an organization to design a system for authenticating emails from legitimate senders and weeding out fakes. The new system is called DMARC — short for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance.

Stocks and bond yields drop on Europe worries

NEW YORK — The wait for an expected deal between Greece and its creditors rattled financial markets around the world Monday. Yields for ultra-safe U.S. government debt hit their lowest this year, the euro dropped against the dollar, and European stocks fell.

U.S. stocks dropped slightly, with the Dow Jones industrial average off 0.1 percent.

Borrowing costs for European countries with the heaviest debt burdens shot higher. The two-year interest rate for Portugal’s government debt jumped to 21 percent after trading around 14 percent last week.

Greece and the investors who bought its government bonds were said to be close to an agreement that would replace bonds held by investment funds and banks with new ones at half the face value.

Starbucks, Tata to open 50 Indian stores this year

MUMBAI, India — Starbucks aims to open 50 outlets in India by year’s end, through a 50-50 joint venture with Tata Global Beverages, the companies said Monday.

Tata Starbucks Ltd., as their venture is known, hopes to capitalize on the rising aspirations — and fattening wallets — of many Indians, who are eager to partake of the global latte life.

The first outlet will open in Mumbai or New Delhi by September.

Wendy’s CEO: Our wounds were ’self-inflicted’

NEW YORK — Wendy’s new CEO on Monday called the dour results of the past few years “self-inflicted wounds” and vowed to do better, laying out plans that included hiring top-tier workers and reclaiming market share from higher-end competitors like five Guys and Smashburger.

Emil Brolick, the CEO since September, told investors that he was intent on winning back customers jaded by a stale menu and inconsistent service, as well as investors, who have grown weary of “a little bit of overpromising and under-delivering.”

And rather than blaming the struggling economy for the revenue declines and quarterly losses of the past few years, Brolick said that the company’s problems were its own fault.

Gates Foundation, drug makers push on tropical ills

Thirteen major pharmaceutical companies, government groups and health charities will work together in a push to eliminate or control by 2020 10 tropical diseases that affect more than a billion people in poor countries.

The partners, including the bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, call it the largest coordinated effort ever to combat neglected tropical diseases. The government groups and charities alone are committing just over $785 million in new funding.

The drug makers are donating billions of doses of their medicines over the rest of the decade, but did not attribute a value to them. The companies also will work together to speed up development of new treatments, and the partners will work on improving drug delivery and treatment programs, including prevention and education.

The Dow Jones Industrial average fell 6.74 points to close at 12,653.72, for a drop of 0.1 percent. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 3.32 points, or 0.3 percent, to 1,313.01. The Nasdaq composite lost 4.6 points, or 0.2 percent, at 2,811.94.

Benchmark crude fell by 78 cents to finish at $98.78 per barrel in New York on Monday. Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oils that are imported by U.S. refineries, lost 71 cents to end at $110.75 per barrel in London.

Heating oil fell 2 cents to finish at $3.05 per gallon and gasoline futures fell 6 cents to end at $2.87 per gallon. Natural gas futures fell 4 cents to end the day at $2.71 per 1,000 cubic feet.

‘Nazi tools’ withdrawn from sale

An auction house has withdrawn from sale a set of surgical instruments it claimed had belonged to the commandant of a Nazi concentration camp, alleging its staff had received death threats.

Villa Hall Auctions said it had pulled Lot 342, a box of tools it claimed belonged to SS Major Anton Burger, commandant of the Theresienstadt camp in what was then Czechoslovakia, after receiving threatening emails and telephone calls from people unhappy that it was selling the box, including one which said it hoped they "died of cancer".

The firm, based in Bude, Cornwall, said it was also looking into areport in the German media that the box was unconnected to Burger, who went into hiding after the war and died in 1991 at the age of 80.

The German newspaper Die Welt reported that it was manufactured by the Anton Buerger company in Dresden.

The Dresden mayor’s office told The associated Press that a company named "Anton Buerger" – spelled "Burger" with the two German umlaut dots over the u, which translates to "ue" in English – manufactured surgical and orthopaedic instruments in the city in the 1940s.

Villa Hall spokeswoman Grace Cloke said they were sad to pull thelot from tomorrow’s sale, claiming the money raised from the box, with aguide price of £2,000 to £4,000, was to be donated to a charity for child survivors of war, along with their fee.

"We have had some threatening calls and emails," she said.

"Some of them made very reasonable arguments against the sale andothers were just threatening, one even said ‘we hope you die of cancer’.

"We spoke to the police and withdrew the items from the auction."

Android Ice Cream Sandwich on Just Over 1 Percent of Devices

The number of Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich is growing slowly, but the latest version of Google’s mobile OS is still only available on 1.12 percent of Android-based gadgets.

Mobile ad network Chitika examined the number of impressions it received in recent days and found that the most popular version of Android remains Gingerbread at 66.29 percent, followed by Froyo at 22.33 percent, and Eclair at 5.39 percent.

The tablet-centric Honeycomb captured 3.3 percent of the market, but Ice Cream Sandwich was, well, sandwiched between the oldest versions of Android: Donut with 0.63 percent and Cupcake at 0.95 percent.

The fragmentation issue comes up every time Google releases an updated version of Android. given that so many manufacturers produce Android-based handsets and many carriers in turn pick up those devices, the timing for when a given phone will get a certain Android update varies wildly.

“This inherent diversity of products may make Android’s strength perpetually its weakness,” Chitika said. “It has taken steps to overcome it, but if these steps will ever be enough to get past the variegation built into such an open system is something we will have to see in time.”

Google stats released in January found that approximately 0.6 percent of Android phones were running Ice Cream Sandwich, about 55 percent were running its predecessor, Gingerbread, and 30.4 percent were on Froyo.

As of Feb. 1, Google’s developer site said 1 percent of devices were on Ice Cream Sandwich, 58.6 percent were on Gingerbread, and 27.8 percent were on Froyo.

The low numbers for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich shouldn’t be entirely shocking. at this point, the mobile OS is only available on a handful of smartphones and tablets, like the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Asus Transformer Prime, and Motorola Xoom. Other manufacturers have promised ICS upgrades for their devices, but that will happen on a staggered basis throughout 2012.

Last month, former Windows Phone exec Charles Kindel said Google has lost control of Android thanks to fragmentation, but predicted the OS will continue to thrive for many years to come.

Kindel’s comments came one week after Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt appeared at the Consumer Electronics Show and argued that Android is not fragmented but “differentiated,” which Kindel said was pure spin.

For more on that, see Hey, Google: Here’s what Fragmentation Means.

The Best of NAMM: Beats, beats and more beats

If you know your oscillators from your saw waves then you’ll probably know that last week NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) took place in California at the Anaheim Convention Center.

NAMM is the largest music product trade show in the world. It’s essentially CES for music, and this year was a record year for the organisation with 95,709 registered attendees and over 1,400 exhibitors.

We’re only going to cover a small percentage of what was on offer, from DAW (digital audio stations) to apps and synths to midi controllers.

One of the main talking points of the show was a new DAW (digital audio station) Bitwig. it comes from some of the clever bods behind Ableton – and  the Berlin start-up is clearly very brave considering they’re setting up shop in the same town as goliaths like Native Instruments and their main rivals Ableton.

There’s no information on pricing, which would give us an idea on who they are looking to target. but, Bitwig’s main appeal is flexible editing tools and a super-fast workflow.

Included are features such as multi-track recording, clip automation, instruments and effects, time-stretching and VST support. They haven’t revealed too much yet – but you can sign up for a chance to beta test the new software later this year at Bigwig.com. Check out the video below for an introduction.

youtube.com/watch?v=7V_t8GfH-v4

One piece of hardware that caught our attention, and probably the attention of all the world’s music producers, was the new MPC Renaissance from hardware stalwarts Akai. this substantial, vintage-esque, piece studio equipment is designed for music producers and digital DJs and offers Akai’s class-leading drum pads and more rotary controls than a steam train.

The audio circuitry is the same that you would find in a Modern MPC, but the Renaissane comes with a special party piece: vintage mode. according to Akai the software is built in-house and will work with your preferred recording suite by running in VST, AU, or RTAS mode.

It also includes a 6GB sample library for reproducing some of the classic sounds of the MPC3000 and MPC60. on the hardware side, the Renaissance is the mother of all controllers with no expense spared — there’s plenty of room for 16 backlit MPC pads, 16 Q-Link controls, and a ton of I/O, including USB, MIDI, 1/4-inch stereo, and a dedicated turntable inputs.

The Renaissance will cost you though, with a street price is expected to be around £1,000.

But, if you can’t afford that sort of money – then have a look at MCP Fly. Built for the iPad 2, it comprises a 16-pad controller that comes in laptop-style case, which also houses your Apple tablet, and an app that enables you to sequence up to four tracks simultaneously.

The concept seems pretty sound to us, though we’re keen to find out just how capable the MPC Fly is in practice.

Digital music store Beatport was at Namm and from what we saw they are getting into the hardware business. one product that caught our eye was their incredibly practical range of gigging cables.

While they don’t offer anything particularly new they did have couple of clever ideas. First off, their range of cables come colour-coded – something someone should have thought of ages ago. There’s no doubt these will be a god-sent for digital musicians and DJ’s, who are often struggling with low lighting levels in clubs when they’re trying to setup their equipment. Another clever touch was the use of hinged USB ports – meaning you can connect equipment securely into the smallest of spaces.
