If you live in Southern Cal, you know that the 405 is closing this weekend. Anyway, I live in downtown LA and I have a pressing matter in San Diego. Realistically, how long do you think it will take to get there and back?
I've heard the horror stories. I'm taking the 5 down but I know it intersects with the 405 eventually. How bad do you think it'll be? Give me your estimates, or advice, and i'll give +10. emotional support would be appreciated as well T_T .
Go to amtrak.com for information about the "Surfliner" trains. Perhaps one of these can get you to San Diego in a timely manner. good luck.
Here's the deal: The issue is going to be in Los Angeles County, most notably on the west side of LA. I don't think that it's going to be an issue down in Orange County where the 5 meets the 405. The further you get from downtown, the less the impact.
However, the previous poster had an excellent suggestion. If you live near downtown, why not just take the Amtrak to San Diego? The train will not be affected by Carmageddon/
Of course, if you want a time estimate, it would have been MOST helpful if you told us WHEN you are going. Traffic Saturday morning at 8AM will be vastly different than 7PM Friday. If you are going Friday night, it coule easily take 4 hours. Saturday morning, figure 2.5-3 hours. If you come back Sunday afternoon, be prepared for more traffic, so maybe 3-4 hours.
It shouldn't be a mess where the 5 meets up with the 405. At least I hope it isn't, I have to go to San Clemente on Saturday although I'll probably just take PCH down. I'm not too concerned about road construction 35 miles away from my place in Long Beach. you should be concerned with the 5 being backed up because of everyone avoiding the 405.
Jet Blue is doing a neat publicity stunt of offering $4 flights from Burbank to Long Beach and Long Beach to Burbank this weekend. Too bad it's not to San Diego. Here's an article aout it.

O-man's suggestion of Amtrak is really good.
Like the 1st answer said, you might be best off taking Amtrak.
Carmageddon (405 closing) help?
